Hey, I know this post is old, but I just wanted to say that there is a re-entry permit. It's called a visa de retour, and it's for temporary French residents who do not yet have their carte de sejour who are traveling outside of France. It essentially allows them to re-enter France without having the carte de sejour. It's supposedly a new law that you must have your CDS before traveling outside of France, and that's why the visa de retour is necessary. It has nothing to do with other EU/Schengen states though.

vote early! if you want to be at the polls on election day, you can do hold signs, hand out flyers, or just help be a non-partisan poll monitor. but lines are going to be HORRIBLE, and the more people who vote early the less chance there is that the polls go down. it's going to be chaotic.

As a European, but living in the USA, and working with study abroad programs, it is very interesting to hear your view as a an American, living in Europe, and taking a study abroad program! I feel for American students I really do, the difference in the cost of living in Europe can be a shock, let alone with the current exchange rate. Also, I could not agree more that study abroad is one of the best investments an individual can ever make - I certainly hope that a weak dollar does not mean students from the USA are dissuaded from taking advantage of the opportunity to learn overseas!
